One-of-a-kind studio pottery vessel in the form of an overscale floor vase. Solidly hand-built and slightly off-kilter with Art Deco-inspired relief decoration and glazed in earthy taupe and rich cobalt blue. The exposed clay base is incised with the artist's signature and date, 1999.
Jacqueline Biaggi immersed herself in art for decades, but it wasn't until she discovered ceramics that she felt grounded in one medium. An exhibition of her ceramic sculptures and vessels, "Memories and Thoughts in Clay," will be on display through Nov. 26 at the Buenaventura Art Association's Harbor Village Gallery in Ventura. An artist's reception is set for today.
"From the early 1970s, Biaggi has explored art as a student, teacher, exhibitor and museum curator, first in her native Puerto Rico, then in New York City and now in Oxnard. Biaggi earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Brooklyn's Pratt Institute in 1976, majoring in printmaking, drawing, painting and ceramics, and a Master of Fine Arts in 1983.
Since moving to Oxnard in 1995, she has focused on ceramics, sculpting objects, figures and vessels to express "psychological and spiritual issues, history and traditions, significant experiences in my life, memories, day-to-day experiences," Biaggi said. "I am an intuitive artist and clay is the best medium that expresses my emotions and spiritual life. On the surface of the vessels, I carve images where serenity takes place." The faces in her works, she said, "are emotional imprints of feelings."
Biaggi's ceramic sculptures have received many awards in the Adah Callahan Professional Juried Art Show at the Ventura County Fair, and she is a member of the Ventura County Potters Guild and BAA". - VC Star, Oct. 23, 2012
