This matching pair of antique brass artillery shell casings dates to the World War I era (circa 1916–1918), based on the stamped markings visible on the base of each shell. The headstamps include manufacturer codes, caliber markings, and date numerals consistent with military-issued artillery shells produced during WWI.
Each cylindrical shell can be repurposed into a decorative trench art vase. One example features hand-engraved floral and geometric motifs, while the other retains a more restrained surface with natural aging and patina. The engraved decoration and conversion into vases were commonly done by soldiers or post-war craftsmen using spent shell casings as commemorative objects.
Stamped bases are visible and legible, showing concentric machining marks, factory codes, and date stamps typical of early 20th-century European artillery production. These markings authenticate the shells’ original military function and firmly place them within the WWI period.
Trench art shell vases are highly collectible and valued for their combination of historical significance and sculptural appeal. They display well as military memorabilia, industrial decor, or antique brass objects.
