An elegant and highly decorative French bronze sculpture titled La Belle aux Jumelles, depicting a fashionable young woman seated gracefully on a rocky outcrop while raising a pair of opera glasses. Crafted in France circa 1950 after a model by Louis Hottot, the figure is mounted on a circular green veined marble base and displays the refined theatricality associated with late 19th-century French figural sculpture.
The woman is richly dressed in a flowing gown with delicately modeled folds, fitted gloves, and an extravagant wide-brimmed hat accented with a large bow. Her poised posture and animated gesture give the composition a sense of movement and personality, while the finely modeled face, hands, drapery, and accessories reveal careful attention to detail. The bronze retains a deep brown patina with warmer rubbed highlights that accentuate the sculptural modeling.
The work is signed “L. Hottot.” Louis Hottot (1834–1905) was a French sculptor known for figural and Orientalist subjects and for bronzes combining realism with decorative elegance. His work was exhibited in Paris during the late 19th century, and he is listed in the Benezit Dictionary of Artists, an important reference for European fine and decorative artists.
The sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and would make a striking addition to a library, study, living room, or collection of French bronzes.
