Large-scale vintage African Kuba cloth, handwoven and hand-decorated by the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Measuring 77 inches tall, this vertical textile functions as a statement wall piece, offering strong visual impact and presence well beyond standard shelving or cabinetry height.
Sourced from a Southern California collector’s estate.
The cloth features bold, abstract black motifs on a warm natural raffia ground, reflecting the Kuba tradition’s sophisticated graphic language and rhythmic use of negative space. Despite its traditional origins, the composition feels strikingly modern and works seamlessly in contemporary, organic modern, brutalist, and wabi-sabi interiors.
The textile is professionally framed in a custom solid walnut frame and float-mounted over cloth back matting. The cloth is display pinned (not glued), preserving the integrity of the original fabric while allowing its natural texture and irregular edges to remain visible.
The frame shows wear consistent with age and display, including minor dents and nicks to the wood and a subtle water mark in one corner of the mat, as pictured. These surface imperfections do not affect structural integrity and contribute to the piece’s vintage character.
Based on materials, weaving style, and pigment application, this piece likely dates to the mid–20th century (circa 1950s–1970s), consistent with high-quality vintage Kuba ceremonial and prestige textiles.
A substantial, visually compelling textile artwork that bridges cultural history and modern design.
