A refined pair of s13 stools by pierre chapo, one of the most rigorous and poetic figures of french postwar design.
the s13 stool plays on the assembly of three converging legs, achieving a remarkably solid and stable base that supports the full weight of the body on a deliberately compact seat surface. This technical challenge — resolved with apparent simplicity — is a defining element of the stool’s appeal, as noted by pierre chapo himself (magen h gallery).
crafted entirely in solid elmwood, these stools exemplify chapo’s uncompromising approach to construction: no veneers, no shortcuts, only carefully selected timber and precise joinery designed to last generations. The rounded seat shows a beautifully expressive grain, while the three angled legs intersect beneath in a sculptural, architectural composition.
the elmwood used here is particularly noteworthy. French elm has become extremely rare due to dutch elm disease, and later or contemporary editions are typically produced in oak or imported elm, which lack the warmth, depth, and character of aged original french elm. The wood in these stools has developed a rich patina over time, with tonal variations and surface marks that speak to decades of use.
visible signs of age, minor scratches, and softened edges are present and have been intentionally preserved, contributing to the authenticity and sculptural presence of the pieces. A conservative restoration can be arranged upon request, should a more uniform appearance be desired.
a timeless and honest design, equally suited as stools, side tables, or sculptural accents in both modern and historic interiors.
