mpressionist Landscape — Fisherman on the River Orne, Normandy, France
André Prévot-Valéri (French, 1890–1959)
Oil on canvas, circa 1920
A tranquil summer view along the River Orne in Normandy, northern France. Calm water moves gently through lush riverbanks as a solitary fisherman drifts at mid-distance—an understated, timeless vision of rural French life.
Subject and Medium
Oil on canvas depicting the River Orne in high summer. Reflections ripple across the water beneath a soft sky, with tall poplars and dense foliage shaping the horizon. The composition is quiet, natural, and deeply atmospheric.
Composition and Technique
This refined Norman river scene invites the viewer inward rather than announcing itself loudly. Painted circa 1920—during the artist’s mature, most sought-after period—the work balances observation and lyricism with a confident, controlled hand. Subtle tonal contrast separates near and far banks, heightening the luminosity of the foreground water and lending the scene depth without theatricality.
Light, Atmosphere, and Palette
Prévot-Valéri is distinguished by restraint and sensitivity to atmosphere. Here, cool blues and blue-greens mingle with mossy and olive greens, softened whites in the clouds, and deeper forest tones along the far bank. The overall effect evokes air, moisture, and space—calm, elegant, and exceptionally versatile in refined interiors.
Normandy as Subject
The artist is especially admired for depictions of Normandy’s rivers, coastlines, and pastoral interiors—landscapes he knew intimately and returned to throughout his career. The River Orne has long attracted painters seeking reflection and tranquility, and this work exemplifies why collectors continue to seek out these Norman views: peace without sentimentality, beauty without excess.
About the Artist
André Prévot-Valéri was a respected French painter known for pastoral and coastal landscapes, particularly those rooted in Normandy. Son of the established landscape painter Auguste Prévot-Valéri, he grew up immersed in the Paris art world. He studied under Marcel Baschet, Henri Royer, and Louis-Marie Désiré-Lucas, debuting at the Paris Salon in 1910 and exhibiting regularly thereafter. He received multiple distinctions including the Édouard Lemaître Prize, Henri Zuber Prize, and a Silver Medal at the Paris Salon. His service during World War I included producing charcoal drawings of wartime life, later published and held in public collections including the British Museum. Postwar, his landscapes gained renewed sensitivity; he held a successful solo exhibition at Galerie Poissonnière in 1926 and received the Prix Rosa-Bonheur in 1928. From the 1930s onward, he settled in Normandy, painting rivers, fields, coastlines, and rural life. His works are represented in museum and public collections in France and the UK.
Historical Context
Painted circa 1920, the work reflects the post–World War I return to restorative imagery in French art—landscapes that reaffirmed stability, nature, and continuity.
