Pair of putti or triumphant angels, carved wood, late 18th century
An exceptional pair of putti or triumphant angels carved from wood, traditionally associated with the Italian or French Baroque. Probably from the late 18th century. They have sweet faces and full forms, with curly hair and dynamic legs and arms raised towards heaven. They served as ornaments in churches, altars, or as part of the furniture and are interpreted as a symbol of celestial grace. Their presence evokes that genuine decorative spirit that combines ornamental function with religious or allegorical symbolism.
In the Judeo-Christian tradition, cherubim originated as beings with a theophanic and protective function; that is, they are guardians of Eden, custodians of the Ark, and companions of the divine presence. In medieval iconography, influenced by the Byzantine theologian and mystic Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, they are identified with the second angelic choir, associated with the perfect knowledge of God. Therefore, in sculpture they can be represented as complex winged figures or as children's heads with wings, incorporated into capitals, portals, or liturgical reliefs.
from the Renaissance onward, their image became more humanized and merged with the classical putto, establishing the model of the winged child's face so common in Baroque altarpieces and programs. In this context, their function became primarily decorative and devotional, acting as a symbol of glory, purity, and the proximity of the sacred, as well as a visual transition between the earthly scene and the divine realm.
