CARVED FOLK ART CANE WITH WHIMSICAL FIGURAL MOTIFS
Probably early 20th century
34 3/4" L
Carved from a single length of hardwood, this highly expressive folk art cane is conceived as an organic, branch like form animated by a sequence of whimsical faces emerging from the shaft. The carving is deeply modeled, allowing the natural irregularities of the wood to guide the composition. Most prominent is the head of an old man with his capped head pulled back in something of a laugh to create the handle. The figures are fabulous caricatures executed with playful exaggeration that blends humor with a slightly grotesque woodland gnome-like character typical of vernacular carving traditions.
We love the surface with its rich, warm patina with a silky and translucency against the raw hardwood grain - it is just such an easy piece to hold. Just below the handle is a small brass mounting around a hole that functions as a whistle. The cane terminates in a simple metal ferrule, suggesting practical use alongside its sculptural ambition.
This cane exemplifies the intersection of folk sculpture and functional utility, where the everyday becomes a vehicle for narrative and wit. The playful faces and hidden whistle point to an object made as much for amusement and personal expression as for support.
Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use, including surface abrasions and minor losses. Brass whistle intact. Shrinkage cracks along the shaft from expansion/shrinkage over the years, more notable in the foot of the cane. A very fine piece, ready for regular use.
