This is a vintage mid-century modern Couroc of Monterey serving tray featuring a decorative bird and floral inlay design. Couroc trays are popular collectibles known for their unique production process and whimsical designs.
The Couroc Company, founded in 1948 in Monterey, CA, produced beautiful and often whimsical black resin trays and glassware made by skilled artisans. Couroc's founder, Guthrie Courvoisier, worked with a variety of plastics while working in the war effort during WWII. He used his experience to develop a proprietary formula of phenolic resin that was durable enough to form into trays and impervious to alcohol and flames. Courvoisier's wife, Moira Wallace, acted as chief designer and led an art commune of skilled artisans in arranging an array of local items into Couroc's resins pieces.
