This " David Hockney : A Retrospective " rare vintage 1988 first edition hardcover collector's Pop Art exhibition book is a very special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The large hardcover art book with teal turquoise linen covered boards, embossed cover and spine titles, and dust jacket is published by Harry N. Abrams Inc. Publishers New York and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Printed in Japan in 1988 on the occasion of the iconic retrospective exhibition.
It features an expansive monograph survey collection of the artworks of the artist David Hockney, with compelling accompanied text essays by R.B. Kitaj, Henry Geldzahler, Christopher Knight, Gert Schiff, Anne Hoy, Kenneth E. Silver, and Lawrence Weschler.
David Hockney ( B. 1937 ) is an English painter, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer. He is an important contributor to The Pop Art Movement of the 1960's. He is considered one of the most influential British artists of The 20th Century. His artworks have commanded greater popular acclaim than any other Contemporary British artist. The Pop Art Expressionist style artworks have been the subject of more than 400 solo exhibitions. Art works by Hockney are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
If ever an artist deserved a retrospective, it is David Hockney, whose fiftieth birthday was celebrated by The Los Angeles County Museum of Art with a landmark exhibition spanning thirty years of his work. Seven authors have contributed to this volume, which accompanied the exhibition. Hockney himself designed a 24-page section of original prints created especially for this book making it a collector's item.
At the end of this absorbing and beautifully illustrated book, there is extensive documentation : a bibliography of books and catalogues and a supplementary bibliography of radio, television programs, and videotapes as well as a chronology. These complete a lavish and sensitively designed tribute to one of the best known and most admired artists of our time.
The rare out of print 1st edition collector's Pop Art book measures 10 1/2" W X 11 1/4" H X 1 1/4" D, with 312 pages. It features 343 illustrations, including 235 in full color and 3 multi-page center foldouts.
