A refined 19th-century architectural etching by Joseph Pennell (1857–1926), one of the most respected American printmakers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and a leading figure of the American etching revival.
This original etching, titled Piazza del Comune, Pistoia (1883), depicts the arcaded façade of the Renaissance Palazzo Comunale in the historic Tuscan city of Pistoia. Pennell completed this work during his first European travels, capturing daily life and architectural rhythm with subtle tonal depth and expressive line work.
Printed on wove paper and hand-signed in pencil by the artist, this piece exemplifies Pennell’s early Italian period and his mastery of architectural subject matter.
Presented in a simple black frame that complements both traditional and contemporary interiors.
