An exceptional example of California studio pottery, this architectural vessel was created by Northern California artist Stanley Feldman in his Daly City studio circa 1960. A striking study in texture and geometry, the piece features a wheel-thrown square-bodied "cube" elevated on a tapered circular pedestal.
Each of the four faces is adorned with a hand-sculpted, flared "rosette" or sunburst motif. These elements are composed of layered, torn-edge clay petals that radiate from a recessed, glazed center with a protruding conical eye. This work perfectly captures the 1960s "Brutalist" transition in studio ceramics where traditional vessel forms were pushed into the realm of abstract sculpture.
Condition & Provenance The vessel retains its original hand-written artist label inside bottom of the base, identifying the provenance. It is in excellent vintage condition. Consistent with the artist's organic, raw-clay aesthetic, there are a few minor nicks to the delicate flared elements that are virtually unnoticeable and do not detract from the structural or visual integrity of the piece.
