Squash — masterpiece by Maria Sanchez from 1985 — one of the smallest objects in the Memphis Milano objects. Composed of three parts in multiple color schemes, the ceramic bowl is hand-turned and painted. The first piece made by the designer had a blue base and a yellow bowl, crossed diagonally by an oblong red block. The square combined with the bowl creates a captivating, dynamic, asymmetrical composition.
The bowl can have multiple functions, hence why it can also be used as an ashtray.

She worked for fifteen years in Italy, and then in the United States, collaborating with countless companies known on a worldwide level. After the encounter with Ettore Sottsass in 1985, she worked with the Memphis group, designing the Squash bowl/ashtray. She later became one of the founding partners of O2 International Ecodesign, and for seven years she was Coordinator of the Strategic Design area of CMD in Buenos Aires.
Today she is a strategic design consultant for many companies and government agencies; she is an academic researcher and teaches in various universities in Argentina, Mexico, Panama and Chile. About MEMPHIS Milano: The Memphis Milano or the Memphis Group design movement, born in 1981 under the vision of Ettore Sottsass and a collective of young designers and architects (Nathalie Du Pasquier included), became a defining cultural phenomenon of the 1980s. By challenging the established norms of design and turning conventional ideas about living spaces on their head, Memphis revolutionized creative and commercial logics. Sottsass, the backbone of the movement, led the charge in reimagining design through unconventional shapes, bold patterns, and innovative materials, pushing the creative boundaries of the industry. Memphis became a symbol of New Design, and its influence continues to resonate across various sectors of production and beyond, leaving a lasting mark on contemporary culture.
Each Memphis Milano piece is timeless and iconic, continuing to captivate audiences for its rebellious, avant-garde nature and its impact on contemporary design sensibilities. These objects remain collectible and influential, symbolizing a pivotal moment in the history of design.
