Nay, sweden 1877 : this curated set of three tinted lithographs presents a coherent and atmospheric visual portrait of uppsala as it appeared in the late nineteenth century. Executed with a calm precision and subtle tonal colouring, the views document the city’s principal urban spaces, riverfront, and elevated outlooks, offering a balanced impression of civic life, architecture, and landscape. Together, the three compositions form a measured and harmonious sequence of exterior views, unified by format, scale, and artistic approach. Note: the beautiful sample of a framed set (see attached images) is just for imagination only. We sell the prints unframed. The plates were drawn and lithographed by a. Nay and published in 1877 in the illustrated volume upsala, with accompanying text by s. Nordström. This later issue contains ten tinted lithographic plates rather than the twelve found in the earlier 1870 edition, and represents a documented variant rather than an incomplete work. Nay’s lithographs are distinguished by their careful architectural rendering combined with softly modulated tones, lending the city scenes both clarity and atmosphere. The set includes views from slottbacken, along the river near the steamboat harbour, and east of dombron, each capturing a different aspect of uppsala’s urban fabric. The elevated perspective from slottbacken establishes a broad overview of the city, while the riverside scenes introduce movement and daily activity, with water, bridges, and buildings interwoven into calm, readable compositions. Human figures appear sparingly, providing scale without distracting from the architectural setting. All three lithographs are horizontal in format, making the set particularly well suited for cohesive presentation in an interior setting. The consistent scale and tonality allow the works to be displayed together as a unified group, while each image also retains sufficient visual strength to stand on its own. The set appeals equally to collectors of scandinavian city views, architectural prints, and nineteenth-century topographical lithography, as well as to interior designers seeking historically grounded yet visually restrained works. These views form part of a broader 1877 visual documentation of uppsala that also included cathedral interiors and additional city scenes. Offered here as a focused city-view group, the set emphasizes uppsala’s public spaces and urban character rather than its ecclesiastical interiors. Condition: good overall condition. Light age-related toning consistent across all three sheets. Minor scattered foxing and faint handling marks, mostly confined to the margins. Image areas clean and well preserved. Margins ample and uniform. Framing tips: the horizontal format benefits from wide ivory or soft warm-grey mats to enhance depth and cohesion across the set. Matching dark walnut, stained oak, or ebonized frames will reinforce the architectural character while maintaining a refined, gallery-quality presentation. Museum glass recommended.
