She is depicted seated frontally within a temple-like architectural setting and flanked by two lions, long-standing symbols of strength, fertility, and control over the natural world. In her hands she holds a sceptre and shield, attributes that reinforce her role as a protective and foundational force within ancient cosmology. The print was published in 1815 in Milan as part of Le Costume Ancien et Moderne, the monumental encyclopedic work compiled by Giulio Ferrario. Ferrario’s ambitious project sought to document the governments, religions, arts, sciences, and customs of ancient and modern civilizations, drawing on classical monuments and historical sources. Alongside its celebrated costume plates, the work included allegorical and historical subjects intended to place human culture within a broader symbolic and intellectual framework. Executed in fine copperplate engraving and finished with delicate original hand colouring, the plate displays a restrained neoclassical palette dominated by cool green and stone-grey tones.
