Terra Allegory, Cybele Mother Earth, Antique Hand-Colored Engraving 1815 : This striking allegorical engraving represents Terra, the personification of Earth, shown as the classical mother goddess Cybele, also known as Rhea or Idaea Mater. She is depicted seated frontally within a temple-like architectural setting and flanked by two lions, long-standing symbols of strength, fertility, and control over the natural world. In her hands she holds a sceptre and shield, attributes that reinforce her role as a protective and foundational force within ancient cosmology. The print was published in 1815 in Milan as part of Le Costume Ancien et Moderne, the monumental encyclopedic work compiled by Giulio Ferrario. Ferrario’s ambitious project sought to document the governments, religions, arts, sciences, and customs of ancient and modern civilizations, drawing on classical monuments and historical sources. Alongside its celebrated costume plates, the work included allegorical and historical subjects intended to place human culture within a broader symbolic and intellectual framework. Executed in fine copperplate engraving and finished with delicate original hand colouring, the plate displays a restrained neoclassical palette dominated by cool green and stone-grey tones. These colours enhance the sculptural quality of the figure and emphasize the calm authority and balance of the composition. The architectural framing and symmetrical layout give the image a strong visual presence, making it equally suitable for a scholarly setting or as a refined decorative statement in a contemporary interior. The sheet bears the original publisher’s blind stamp of Le Costume Ancien et Moderne, embossed into the paper at the time of issue. This dry stamp is characteristic of Ferrario’s Milan editions and serves as an important confirmation of authenticity and period. As issued, the embossed seal is visible in the sheet and may lightly overlap the image area. The print is offered unframed, allowing for custom presentation. Condition report: Good antique condition. Light overall age toning with scattered foxing, mainly in the margins. The image itself remains strong and well preserved, with fresh original hand colouring. Plate mark visible. Original publisher’s blind stamp present, as issued, in places lightly overlapping the image. Framing suggestions: This allegorical engraving presents beautifully with a generous ivory or warm parchment-coloured mat to emphasize the architectural symmetry. A dark walnut, ebonized wood, or muted antique gilt frame will complement its neoclassical character and suit both traditional and high-end contemporary interiors.
