Nishijima Katsuyuki
“Yooshoku (Evening Colors)”
Japanese Woodblock Print
This elegant Japanese woodblock print, Yooshoku (Evening Colors), captures the quiet poetry of dusk settling over traditional rooftops. Rendered in Nishijima Katsuyuki’s distinctive modern-sōsaku hanga style, the composition balances graphic clarity with atmospheric warmth, using layered tones of amber, ochre, and charcoal to evoke the fading light of evening.
The print depicts tiled rooftops silhouetted against a richly patterned sky, where stylized clouds drift across a glowing horizon. Nishijima’s masterful use of color and line transforms an everyday architectural view into a contemplative scene, reflecting both Japan’s architectural heritage and the artist’s modern sensibility.
This example is signed and titled in pencil by the artist, a detail highly valued by collectors of post-war Japanese prints. The work is presented with generous margins and remains a striking, well-balanced composition suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
A refined and timeless work, Yooshoku (Evening Colors) exemplifies Nishijima Katsuyuki’s ability to merge tradition with modern graphic expression, making it an excellent addition to any serious collection of Japanese woodblock prints.

About the Artist: Nishijima Katsuyuki (西嶋 勝之, 1945– )
Nishijima Katsuyuki is a respected Japanese printmaker associated with the sōsaku hanga (creative print) movement, in which the artist maintains full control over design, carving, and printing. Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture, he studied at the Kyoto City University of Arts and became known for his architectural subjects, urban landscapes, and atmospheric views of traditional Japan.
His works are characterized by bold graphic structures, subtle color gradations, and a modern reinterpretation of classical Japanese themes. Nishijima’s prints have been widely collected internationally and are held in both private and institutional collections. His ability to distill mood and place into clean, timeless compositions has made his work especially appealing to modern collectors of Japanese art.
