Vetro Soffiato Glass Vase by Vittorio Zecchin for Venini Murano 1924
Rare mouth blown (vetro soffiato) art glass vase, designed by Vittorio Zecchin in 1924. Manufactured by Venini & C. Murano Venice. Made of transparent amethyst glass with ribbing and heat-applied drops. Venini Model number 1938. An early example of Murano's outstanding art glass production. Signed with two line acid etched signature 'venini murano'.
Vittorio Zecchin (1878 - 1947) was a native of Murano and the son of a glass technician. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice in 1901, but initially decided against working as an artist. In 1908, he joined the Ca' Pessaro group, which was made up of a number of young Venetian artists. Together with the painter Teodoro Wolf Ferrari, he presented some glasses made by Barovier at the XI Venice Biennale in 1914. From 1921 to 1925, he was the artistic director of the company Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappellin Venini & C., for which he created classic pieces in clear glass and delicate colors. These vases, inspired by the Venetian painting style of the 16th century, were the first examples of modern Murano glasswork. Vittorio Zecchin also worked for Ferro-Toso, A.Ve.M., Salir, Barovier, Seguso Ferro and Fratelli Toso.
