"Anticipation" is a significant work of geometric abstraction by celebrated designer and sculptor Hy Farber. This rare piece exemplifies Farber’s signature fusion of Art Deco architectural lines with organic, modernist warmth.
The sculpture is defined by its striking construction of rich, layered wood. As seen in the surface details, the carving exposes concentric rings of grain—reminiscent of tree growth rings or planetary orbits—which add a hypnotic, textural depth to the piece. The composition balances a perfect sphere atop a stylized, angular body, creating a sense of kinetic potential and poise that reflects its title.
The warm, golden-amber hues of the timber are dramatically grounded by a substantial, newly restored black plinth base, offering a sophisticated contrast of materials. Farber’s transition from a successful career in commercial design to fine art is evident in the work’s clean, graphic silhouette and meticulous execution.
Hy Farber, a distinguished designer based in Los Angeles, dedicated his creative energies to crafting unique wood sculptures after retirement. A highly trained artist, he honed his skills at two prestigious New York institutions: the Florence Cane School of Art and The Pratt Institute. Farber’s distinctive works are characterized by their contemporary, abstract, and Art Deco designs, seamlessly blending classical influences with a modernist sensibility.
His sculptures are considered collector's items due to their exceptional quality and extreme rarity; Farber created only an estimated 60 wooden carved works in total throughout his lifetime. His work has been featured in a multitude of exhibitions across the United States, including notable showings at:
The National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC (1942)
Brand Library Art Center, Glendale, CA (1994)
San Diego Art Institute, San Diego, CA (2001)
The Millard Sheets Center for the Arts, Los Angeles, CA (2011)
