Japanese scroll of Shoki the Demon Queller depicting an oni (mischievous little demon), its war club in front of it, as it pays obeisance to Shoki the Demon Queller who stands in front of it with a drawn sword in his hand. Loosely and finely painted with red ink on creme silk. An inscription in gyosho script, followed by the signature, Sankei, and a red seal of the artist, is seen at the upper right of the image. Mounted on a shimmering, blue and silver, silk brocade nakamawashi in a diamond chain, lattice pattern with with floral medallions and right facing, Wanzi characters. The ten and ji are a shimmering. dark and light gold, silk brocade in a flowering, peony vines pattern. The ichimonji at the top and bottom of the image proper are done in an ecru and gold, silk brocade in a different, flowering, peony vines pattern.. The makio and kakio are of black and white, silk cord, flat woven in a checkerboard pattern. Black jikusaki are at the bottom of the scroll. The exterior cover is of a heavy light blue paper. Circa late 19th century.
