Origin: South India
Period: Nayaka Dynasty, circa 18th century
Medium: Cast bronze, lost-wax technique

Provenance: Private collection of Kenneth Merkle
This finely cast South Indian bronze depicts Lord Krishna in his celebrated Kaliya Damana (Kaliya Mardana) pose, triumphantly subduing the serpent demon Kaliya. Executed in the refined Nayaka style, the sculpture reflects the continuation of the great Chola bronze tradition into the 17th–18th centuries, characterized by rhythmic movement, elegant proportions, and expressive detail.
Krishna is shown standing in a lively dancing posture atop a circular geometric primitive lotus pedestal mounted on a square base, his raised right foot resting upon the hooded head of the cobra. His left arm extends outward holding the serpent’s tail, while his right hand holds a butter ball (navaneeta)—a charming reference to Krishna’s childhood exploits as the divine butter thief. The figure is nude except for finely modeled body jewelry, including armlets, anklets, necklaces, and sacred adornments.
The youthful face features almond-shaped eyes, a serene expression, and pierced earlobes with earrings. His hair is combed back and gathered into a sculptural chignon, typical of South Indian devotional bronzes of this period. The bronze displays a deep, naturally developed patina with areas of age-appropriate wear and oxidation, consistent with its age and devotional use.
Compact in scale, this sculpture was likely created as a personal devotional icon for household worship. Works of this type are represented in major institutional collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Government Museum, Chennai.
A rare and expressive example of late Nayaka bronze sculpture, rich in iconography and movement, and highly desirable to collectors of Indian, Himalayan, and devotional art.
