Very unique Batak calendar pendant, originating from the Batak people of North Sumatra, Indonesia.
These items are traditionally made from bone, often buffalo, and features intricate carvings or scrimshaw designs.
The Porhalaan is a lunisolar calendar used for divination rather than standard timekeeping. It was interpreted by a shaman or a ritual specialist known s a “Datu” to determine auspicious or inauspicious days for important life events and rituals, such as planting crops, weddings, or traveling.
Purchased 1970’s, originally had a very broken and rusted chain. Pictures show you each and every angle, no hidden damages.
