Striking vintage decorative bowl designed and manufactured in the 1980s by Emilia Castillo, one of the most celebrated figures of modern Mexican silver design. The bowl is crafted in solid brass with a hand-hammered surface, finished in silver plate, and richly adorned with semi-precious natural stone inlays, including lapis lazuli, azurite, malachite, jasper, and additional stones arranged in a rhythmic geometric pattern around the rim.
The form is bold and architectural, with a wide circular opening and a deeply hammered interior, reflecting Castillo’s signature fusion of traditional Mexican silversmithing techniques with contemporary sculptural design. The contrast between the reflective silver surface and the colorful stone cabochons creates a visually dynamic and highly collectible object.
This piece retains its original Emilia Castillo hallmark, stamped:
“Emilia Castillo – Mexico – M.R. – Plateado – TO-85”,
confirming authenticity and origin.
Emilia Castillo – Career & Heritage
Emilia Castillo comes from a legendary lineage of Mexican silversmiths rooted in Taxco, the historic center of Mexican silver production. She is the daughter of Antonio Castillo, co-founder of the iconic Los Castillo workshop, and was instrumental in carrying forward the family’s design legacy while establishing her own distinct voice. Her work is known for its organic forms, refined craftsmanship, and incorporation of natural stones, and is highly sought after by collectors of Mexican modernism and post-war design.
