This striking Art Deco stoneware vase was produced by the Pierrefonds manufactory in France, a respected early 20th-century ceramics workshop known for its technically ambitious glazes and architectural Art Deco forms.
The vase features a richly developed crystalline glaze with metallic iridescence, achieved through high-temperature firing and controlled kiln cooling. Deep green and blue tones are animated by crystallization blooms and metallic highlights that pool and radiate across the surface, creating pronounced depth and movement that shifts with the light. The strong, faceted body and generous scale reflect the bold, sculptural language characteristic of the Art Deco period.
The piece is stamped “Pierrefonds” beneath the base, confirming its manufacture. Crystalline glazes are among the most demanding ceramic techniques and were produced in limited quantities due to the high rate of kiln loss, making successful large-scale examples such as this particularly desirable.
A powerful and decorative example of French Art Deco ceramic production, combining technical sophistication with strong visual presence.
About Faïencerie de Pierrefonds
Founded in 1903–1904 in the scenic town of Pierrefonds, the Faïencerie de Pierrefonds — originally known as Faïencerie Héraldique — began under the leadership of Count Olivier Hallez d’Arros. Early on the manufactory attracted artistic talent, and in 1912 ceramist and sculptor Émile Bouillon brought a new creative direction to the workshop. Pierrefonds became known for its richly glazed stoneware (grès) featuring spectacular crystalline and artful enamel effects, evolving through Art Nouveau into refined early 20th-century decorative styles. Many pieces bear distinctive marks such as a helmeted knight between the letters F and H, referring to the company’s original name, Faïencerie Héraldique. Produced in modest numbers with a strong artistic identity, Pierrefonds ceramics are prized today for their expressive glazes, sculptural forms, and their place within France’s decorative arts heritage.
