This striking modular Medea sofa is one of the most iconic designs of the Swiss manufacturer Artanova, originally created in 1984 by designer Michael C. Brandis. Conceived as a fusion of meticulous craftsmanship and modern functional design, the Medea embodies the European aesthetic of the late 20th century—organic, comfortable, and timeless.

Brandis, known for his background in both art and craft, consistently pursued forms in which ergonomics and comfort dictated aesthetic decisions. The Medea stands as a perfect example of this philosophy. Its soft, rounded silhouette naturally supports the body, inviting full relaxation while maintaining a sophisticated visual balance.

Design & Features

The sofa is modular, allowing the arrangement to be freely adapted to different interiors and needs. This set includes four modules, accompanied by two removable leather headrests that can be positioned anywhere along the backrest for personalized comfort. The removable armrests offer additional flexibility in shaping the layout and proportions of the piece.

Originally produced in natural leather—a hallmark of Artanova’s craftsmanship—the presented version has been reupholstered in “Mika” by Davis Fabrics, a dense, plush textile with a soft, fur-like texture. The fabric enhances the sofa’s organic curves and lends it a warm, contemporary character. Paired with sleek metal legs, the piece retains the elegant balance between comfort and modernity that defines Brandis’s work.

Construction & Comfort

As with all Artanova pieces, the internal structure is crafted using premium materials. The cushions are filled with a blend of natural down and high-quality foams, ensuring a deep, enveloping seat while providing stable support. The cushions are substantial, weighty, and resilient—hallmarks of the brand’s uncompromising approach to comfort.

The modular base elements are upholstered in matte black natural leather, subtly elastic and beautifully preserved. Chrome details and leather components remain in very good condition. The sofa presents exceptionally well, with fresh upholstery and an inviting, sculptural presence.
