This vintage set of three tokkuri (Japanese sake bottles), dating to around 1940, has that restrained, functional presence that feels remarkably contemporary in an interior.
Dimensions: height 33 cm, diameter 17 cm (1 piece). Height 25.5 cm, diameter 13 cm (2 pieces).
The silhouettes are classic and calm, finished in a soft light-grey glaze and wrapped with hand-painted calligraphy in bold brushstrokes. The variation in size makes the set read instantly as a strong trio—kept together as a still life, or split across a space for a more subtle rhythm.
Up close, the details stand out: gentle shifts in sheen across the glaze, small signs of age, and a worn foot that confirms these were genuine utilitarian objects. The calligraphy gives each bottle a graphic character and makes them visually compelling even when displayed empty.
Styling tip: use them as sculptural accents on a low cabinet or shelf, or place a single branch, dried stems, or one flower in a bottle for a quiet ikebana-inspired look. Against a dark wooden wall panel—or in a minimal setting—the lines and brushwork come through beautifully.
Condition: in nice condition with light marks and patina consistent with age; sturdy and stable.
