A sophisticated pair of antique scientific battery jars, circa 1900. The sculptural quality of the hand-blown glass combined with the warm patina of the brass collars makes these sculptural objects perfect for a study, library, or modern industrial living space. The 8-inch vessel is noted for a distinctive "seed" (air bubble) in the glass, highlighting its handmade origins.
Condition: Wear consistent with age and use. Original patina.
These are classic "Grenet" or "Bichromate" dip batteries. They feature the iconic bottle-form glass reservoir with a wide, bulbous bottom for stability and a cylindrical neck. The tops are fitted with brass collars and ebonite (hard rubber) or blackened wood caps.
Mechanism: The central rod is designed to plunge a zinc plate into the electrolyte solution (originally potassium dichromate and sulfuric acid) to activate the battery. The two flanking plates are carbon.
Glass vessel: The 8-inch unit features a distinct, elongated air bubble (blister) within the glass neck. This is not a crack. It is a "seed" or manufacturing artifact typical of mouth-blown glass from the late 19th century, confirming its age and authenticity.

There is a "bubble" in the neck, this is a production characteristic. Metal: Brass retains a deep, unpolished patina (desirable). Plates: The internal carbon plates show expected signs of age (whitish oxidation/salts), which adds to the "lab-used" aesthetic. The zinc plates are likely degraded or remnant, which is standard for these items. less
