This cohesive set of six copper engravings originates from Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte, published in Paris in 1802 by Didot and drawn by Dominique Baron Vivant Denon. Produced directly after Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign, Denon’s publication represents the first major visual and scholarly achievement to emerge from the expedition and laid the foundations for European Egyptology.
The plates focus on ancient Egyptian relief sculpture, hieroglyphic inscriptions, ritual scenes, and symbolic imagery, presented in a systematic and analytical manner. Figures of deities, priests, and rulers appear alongside architectural elements, funerary objects, and narrative relief panels. Several plates isolate individual relief scenes or hieroglyphic groups, while others combine multiple vignettes to illustrate ritual practices, iconography, and symbolic systems. The emphasis is not on dramatic scenery, but on clarity, structure, and faithful recording of the monuments as they appeared at the end of the 18th century.
As a set, these six plates read as an intellectual ensemble, offering insight into ancient Egyptian religious life, symbolism, and visual language. They are particularly appealing to collectors of early archaeology, Napoleonic history, and Egyptomania, while also functioning beautifully as a refined wall installation for interiors that favor scholarly depth and graphic restraint.
