This refined pair of hand-colored lithographs presents two complementary scenes from medieval Catholic ritual life: the funeral rites of a bishop and the Elevation of the Host during Mass. Together, they offer a vivid visual narrative of medieval spirituality, spanning death, ceremony, and sacrament, and reflecting the central role of the Church in medieval society.
Both images originate from the celebrated 19th-century studies of medieval costume and ceremonial life by Camille Bonnard, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri and published in Paris circa 1860. Bonnard’s publications were highly influential during the Gothic Revival, combining antiquarian scholarship with romantic historical imagination. Mercuri’s finely controlled line and delicate hand-coloring bring clarity and dignity to these reconstructed medieval scenes. The first plate depicts the funeral of a high-ranking ecclesiastic, shown laid out in full episcopal vestments and surrounded by clergy, monks, and acolytes holding candles. The careful hierarchy of figures, liturgical objects, and solemn expressions emphasizes both communal mourning and ecclesiastical authority. The oval vignette format recalls illuminated manuscripts and reinforces the medieval character of the scene. The second plate shows the Elevation of the Host, the most sacred moment of the Mass, when the priest raises the consecrated wafer before the congregation. The architectural setting, star-decorated vault, patterned tiles, and richly ornamented vestments reflect idealized medieval church interiors and the theological importance of the Eucharist. The composition captures reverence, stillness, and ritual focus. As a pair, these works are exceptionally well matched in subject, scale, color palette, and historical intent. They are ideally suited for collectors of religious art, medieval history, or Gothic Revival imagery, and they display beautifully together in libraries, studies, or refined interior settings seeking scholarly depth and quiet symbolism.
