Together, they offer a vivid visual narrative of medieval spirituality, spanning death, ceremony, and sacrament, and reflecting the central role of the Church in medieval society.

Both images originate from the celebrated 19th-century studies of medieval costume and ceremonial life by Camille Bonnard, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri and published in Paris circa 1860. Bonnard’s publications were highly influential during the Gothic Revival, combining antiquarian scholarship with romantic historical imagination. Mercuri’s finely controlled line and delicate hand-coloring bring clarity and dignity to these reconstructed medieval scenes. The first plate depicts the funeral of a high-ranking ecclesiastic, shown laid out in full episcopal vestments and surrounded by clergy, monks, and acolytes holding candles. Condition: Both sheets in good condition. Light, even age toning throughout. Minor scattered foxing and faint handling marks, mostly outside the image areas. Hand-coloring remains fresh and well-preserved. No plate marks, as issued (lithographs).
