Created in the immediate aftermath of Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign, Denon’s publication stands among the earliest first-hand visual records of Egypt and proved hugely influential in shaping European Egyptomania and the visual language of nineteenth-century Egypt studies.
