This impressive wooden bear was hand-carved on Hokkaido and dates from the 1970s.
Dimensions: height 31 cm, width 54 cm, depth 27 cm.
The sculpture is typical of Ainu carving: strong volumes, a grounded stance, and an expressive head with an open mouth, while the fur is suggested through rhythmic gouge marks along the legs and neck. The warm honey tone of the wood and its soft sheen show how the surface has developed a beautiful patina over time.
Ainu bears were made on Hokkaido as distinctive regional artworks and became a widely recognised symbol of craftsmanship and local identity. This example has a strong sculptural presence and works equally well as a standalone piece on the floor, a low table, or a wide windowsill, or styled alongside ceramics and textiles.
In a minimalist interior it immediately brings warmth and character; in an eclectic setting it becomes a bold, earthy anchor among other objects.
Condition: good, used condition with visible signs of age and wear; solid and stable.
