So far as the Internet is concerned this is 2nd piece of this artist's work known to exist. The first piece came on the market in 2023 and was offered for sale by Bonhams New York, of one United States president George Washington. The artist we are speaking of is Christian F. Carsten (1863 - 1956) of Illinois.
And this is really all we know about him. His name, and years of his life. What we also know is he was a great artist; even if we have to go off of two pieces. His imagination and quality of carving is bar none. I believe the work speaks for itself. Washington was depicted riding a horse while waving a sword; but here, in a more elaborate scene, we have a roaring lion in the wilderness. A large enough work (meaning 18" wide) worthy of a fierce king of the jungle. Depth and width and attention to details brings this whole scene to life. The addition of the only color, the white of the teeth, brings attention to the main subject in the work. What elevates this piece even further, and which the Washington piece did not have, is the original black frame the artist made for it. The beautiful thick black glazed frame with feet really adds to the work. And that mysterious number 56 on the bottom right corner only adds to the mystery of this artist. What exactly was that number for we may never know.
The work is signed on the bottom right corner C. F. Carsten
