"Friends Cast and Producers" (TV Cast Caricature, 2001) This is Al Hirschfeld's famous depiction of the cast of the hit sitcom "Friends" with its producer, Kevin Bright and others looking through a window. Created near the end of the show's run, the lithograph features the six main actors—Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer—seated together on a couch reminiscent of the Central Perk set.
In classic Hirschfeld style, the actors are rendered in fluid, elegant ink lines that capture their character traits and physical likenesses with minimal strokes. It serves as a time capsule of 1990s/2000s pop culture. This limited edition lithograph is signed in pencil by the artist, numbered 47/100, and printed on wove paper. The print measures 16 3/4 inches x 25 inches or 25" x 30" in its beautifully matted black metal frame, ready to hang.
About the artist:
Al Hirschfeld (1903–2003) was a celebrated American caricaturist best known for his distinctive black-and-white portraits of Broadway stars and celebrities. Born in St. Louis, he moved to New York City at a young age, where his artistic talent flourished. He studied at the Art Students League and traveled extensively, but it was his work in the theater that cemented his legacy. For 75 years, his drawings were a staple of The New York Times Arts section, becoming as synonymous with Broadway as the plays themselves. His linear, calligraphy-like style captured the essence and movement of performers without relying on grotesque exaggeration, earning him the nickname "The Line King."
Hirshfeld's career spanned nine decades, covering everything from the golden age of Hollywood to modern television sitcoms. His work was not limited to newspapers; he created film posters, album covers (including for Aerosmith), and postage stamps. Even in his later years, he remained culturally vital, documenting the changing face of entertainment until his death just months shy of his 100th birthday. In recognition of his impact on the theater world, the Martin Beck Theatre on Broadway was renamed the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in 2003.
