Large Luis Alvarez Mid-century Portrait Oil Painting, Newly Framed
Offered for sale is a portrait oil painting of a young sailor by Luis Alvarez (1932-1997). The painting is moody and created in a raw and rustic nature.
"Garcon De La Marine" is a misinterpretation for the name of a song about sailors "Les Gars de la Marine" that was featured in the 1931 film Le Capitaine Craddock. The score was composed by Werner Richard Heymann with lyrics by Jean Boyer. The song is a march celebrating the life of sailors, featuring lyrics about traveling from the South Pole to the North Pole and visiting ports.
The painting is signed as shown in the lower right. The canvas has recently been reframed where it appears to float and allows the raw nature that Alvarez intended to convey.
