Vintage Mid-century Modern Steel Beam and Driftwood Sculpture - Circa 1950’s
The sculpture is comprised of a demolished steel beam and structural piece of wood timber. The salvaged refuse is woven together forming a composition of forces held in balance but not mechanically bonded. The threaded beam clamp and steel spike no longer perform as originally intended. The threaded beam clamp and steel spike are building fragments that allow for the composition to be extended beyond the edges of the sculpture. The rusted and irregular cut edges of the steel beam along with the splintered rough timber alludes to a building tableau which indirectly refers to the idea of a scene or visual composition that is actively being constructed or developed as one moves around the sculpture.
The surfaces of the rusted, painted and welded steel beam and splintered - fragmented wood timber can be viewed as a remnant drawing artistically representing history, decay, and resilience by using the rust's texture and patterns to tell a story of time, change, and the beauty found in the abandoned or weathered. The drawing itself can act as a direct mark of human intervention or a symbol that is intertwined with the process of the steel beam and wood timbers natural deterioration.
The sculpture is signed with the initials DS. The sculpture was purchased from an antique dealer at the Chelsea 26th Street Flea Market in 1977. At the time of purchase, the antique dealer noted that the sculpture was created sometime in the 1950’s.
