A father devoted to his faith and his son.

Carved in plaster, this effigy of Saint Joseph with a lily and the Infant Jesus is a product of late 19th-century Franco-Italian religious craftsmanship, with a neoclassical style.

The father of Jesus is depicted here standing, dressed as a shepherd. The branch he holds is a lily, his attribute. This symbol attests to his being chosen by God to be the husband of the Virgin Mary after being selected by bringing a branch to the Temple in Jerusalem. The flower symbolizes his love and devotion.

The infant Jesus is at the same height as his father, indicating his importance, and his stature, indicating the significance of Jesus' future. Their heads are close together to symbolize a father's love for his son and a father's protection of his children; after all, Saint Joseph is the patron saint of fathers and the Catholic Church!

In good overall condition, it is important to note some wear to the patina and a small chip at the feet of Jesus.
