Art Deco Plaster Bust of the Virgin Mary after Raphael, dated 1911
The grace of the Virgin Mary, embodied during the Art Deco period.
A creation of religious art from the Art Deco period (1910-1939), this plaster bust depicts the veiled Virgin Mary in lamentation. The Art Deco period is characterized by an emphasis on linear curves and geometry, here represented by the folds of the veil, the angular form of the Virgin, and her oval base.
The Virgin's expression is that of a mother, heartbroken by the tragic fate of her son, who was so promising, and by a questioning of the Lord's will over the destiny of believers and the world.
A testament to the trials of the Virgin Mary's life, as well as those of many believers, this sculpture is full of symbolism important to the lives of believers: sorrow, mourning, and doubt in one's own convictions. Once the hard times have passed and peace returns, we rediscover the sweetness of life and serenity. This is the ingenuity of this sculpture, sharing two types of emotions simultaneously.
In very good overall condition, it is important to note some slight wear on the base and a touch of patina acquired over time. It remains a superb sculpture from the Art Deco period, perfect for a religious setting.
