Created in the 19th century, this biscuit porcelain figurine depicts Saint Anthony of Padua, the famous 12th-century Portuguese saint born in 1195 in Lisbon, Portugal, and died in 1231 in Padua, Italy. He is shown holding the Child Jesus, a figure legend recounts as having held the infant Jesus in his arms one night.

Patron saint of Portugal, of sailors, and of the oppressed, he is one of the most popular Franciscan saints in Europe, particularly in Portugal, where his image can be found in shops, churches, hospitals, and the homes of devout Christians. He is also invoked when objects are lost, and it is popularly customary to call upon him when something is lost with the following phrase: "Saint Anthony of Padua, great thief, great trickster, return to us what is not yours!"
