A WINTER GATHERING: ROBIN AND MIXED BRITISH SONGBIRDS (1973)
Robin Reckitt (British, b.1928) — Original Watercolor on Paper
In the Tradition of Archibald Thorburn
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
SUBJECT & MEDIUM
Original British ornithological watercolor painted in 1973 by wildlife artist Robin Reckitt. The composition depicts a woodland-edge clearing in winter filled with mixed British songbirds and woodland species, centred on a European Robin (Erithacus rubecula) perched on a tree stump. Watercolour on paper, presented behind protective glass.

COMPOSITION & TECHNIQUE
A highly accomplished multi-figure wildlife study featuring over 30 individual birds arranged within a naturalistic habitat. The robin acts as the focal point while surrounding species—pheasant, blackbird, thrush, finches, tits, wagtail, sparrows, swallow, martin and others—are shown feeding, perching, calling and in flight, creating the lively effect of a mixed-species winter flock. Soft atmospheric washes form the woodland setting, contrasted with crisp, finely observed detail in the birds. The overall style aligns with the British ornithological tradition associated with Archibald Thorburn, combining painterly atmosphere with accurate natural history observation.
