Original signed batik painting on fabric by Master Chuah Thean Teng (Malaysian, 1914–2008), widely regarded as the father of Malaysian batik painting. This atmospheric work depicts a moonlit village scene with stilted architecture reflected over water, rendered in a restrained, moody palette characteristic of Teng’s earlier and more sought-after compositions.
The piece was created using the traditional wax-resist batik technique, with visible crackling and layered dye work that give depth and movement to the surface. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right.
This work was acquired in Southeast Asia during the 1960s, directly from the artist, when Chuah Thean Teng was actively redefining batik as a fine art medium. His works are held in museum and private collections worldwide and are avidly sought by collectors of Southeast Asian modern art.
Professionally framed in a floating mount with a light-transmitting backing, allowing illumination through the fabric as intended. The artwork remains sealed within its frame and has not been removed since purchased. It has been stored inside, in climate controlled conditions for the duration since purchase.
A beautiful and authentic example of Chuah Thean Teng’s work, equally suited for a curated interior or a serious art collection.
