Full Description (seller voice — paste into description field)
Offered from my private collection is a refined British Georgian pencil drawing depicting Gisborne Court at Peterhouse, St Peter’s College, Cambridge. Executed with disciplined draughtsmanship, the sheet records the north and south elevations of the court with precise perspective, careful brick and stone articulation, and subtle tonal modulation. A small flock of birds animates the sky, preserving atmosphere without diminishing the work’s documentary clarity.
Gisborne Court was constructed in 1825–1826 to designs by William McIntosh Brookes in a restrained Gothic Revival idiom. The drawing records architectural phases including a refaced fifteenth-century range on the right and a west screen wall that was later removed. As Peterhouse is Grade I listed and the oldest of Cambridge’s colleges, visual records of these 19th-century additions are of particular interest to collectors of academic and architectural topography.
The sheet is best placed within the British School, early nineteenth century, and is described here as in the manner of Joseph Michael Gandy (1771–1843). While the drawing is signed lower right “Hill Delt,” research has not located an established artist under that exact name; nonetheless the technical handling, measured composition and architectural fidelity indicate a trained professional hand of the period.
The drawing is presented in its original-style wooden frame painted black with a gilt inner slip and glazed for protection. A metal hanging loop is fitted to the reverse; the piece is ready for immediate display.
Framed dimensions: 33 cm wide × 23 cm high × 2.2 cm depth.
Provenance: acquired from a Cambridge antiques dealer and curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. The verso carries a modern colour photograph of Gisborne Court, linking the historic view to the present building.
