This is a stunning silver-plate sauce or gravy boat produced in 1986 by the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMA), faithfully reproducing an 18th-century French design by Pierre-Adrien Dachery.
Dachery was an 18th century master silversmith in the prosperous city of Saint-Quentin. The region was a wealthy textile and mercantile center with an affluent bourgeois and aristocratic clientele, which supported a strong guild system for gold and silversmiths. The region produced silver of exceptional craftsmanship, often rivaling Parisian work in quality. Saint-Quentin silversmiths were influenced by Parisian Rococo design but often interpreted it with more sculptural forms, strong natural motifs and a balance between exuberance and structure.
The underside of this piece is stamped “MMA 1986 – Pierre Adrien Dachery – France 1768-1775."
