Original 19th-century hand-tinted lithograph from Egypt & Nubia From Drawings Made on the Spot by David Roberts, R.A., published in London by F. G. Moon in 1849. Drawn on site in 1839 and lithographed by Louis Haghe, this plate is among the most iconic images produced in the series.
This is a Standard Edition folio, identifiable by the marginal title printed in the ink color of one of the tint stones rather than in black — a known marker of the SE issue. The subtle, integrated coloring reflects the original lithographic process rather than later hand coloring.
Presented in a later frame with aged matting. Light foxing is visible in the sky, consistent with age. Paper quality, dimensions, and printing characteristics align with other confirmed SE folios from this set.
From a small group of related folio prints (shown grouped in photos), all of which were originally framed in the same manner, with the printed title strips affixed to the reverse. In this example, the title strip was removed during an earlier re-matting, while the other folios in the group retain theirs intact.
Roberts’ Egypt & Nubia is widely regarded as the high point of tinted lithographic publishing in the 19th century, produced at a moment when artistic vision, technical skill, and ambitious publishing briefly converged.
