This massive hand carved wooden folk art heron sculpture appears to date to the mid 20th century and was likely made as garden or yard decor. The figure is carved in full round with detailed feather work and remains hand painted in shades of blue, gray, black, red, and natural wood tones, and is mounted on its original wooden stake for ground placement. It would make an excellent addition to any garden, or for use indoors as a great coastal accent.
The sculpture measures approximately 81.5 inches tall overall including the stake, with the carved bird measuring 53 inches tall, 33 inches wide, and approximately 1.5 inches deep. The piece shows general wear consistent with age and outdoor use, including surface wear to the paint, weathering to the wood, and scattered cracks and losses typical of carved garden figures.
