Raymond K. Sobota designed this low cabinet for Century Furniture's Cathay Collection in the early 1970's. The entire piece is covered in an exotic veneer that was further embellished with spackled paint. The brass hardware is exceptional, the middle pull tab creating the illusion that it is part of a stationary support, when in reality, it is attached to the left door (refer to picture 17). As a vintage piece of furniture, there are a few condition issues that I need to point out. There is a rubbed area under the left door (refer to picture 10). The legs are slightly scuffed, most notably the front right leg (refer to picture 11). There is a bit of discoloration in the wood on the right door (refer to picture 13). I photographed the sides and back of the cabinet (refer to pictures 7, 8 and 9). The top is in very good condition and has a lovely wood grain (refer to picture 4).
This cabinet isn't marked with the stamp normally found on Century Furniture pieces. There was a brittle paper label on the underside of the cabinet that had the model number and the word "Commode" on it, but it has fallen off. I still have this label for future reference.
I photographed this cabinet outside on a sunny afternoon in January. It will invariably look different when viewed in an interior setting under artificial light. Please take this into consideration when matching colors.
