“Place de La Concorde” , 1948
Signed Dyf and dated 1948 Paris (lr)
Oil on canvas
Canvas: 29 x 39.75 Inches (73.6 x 99 cm)
Framed: 35 x 45.25 Inches
This larger than life oil on canvas original Dyf painting is rare and important. It almost represents two to three paintings in one. Claudine Dyf titled this piece as “Place De La Concorde”. It could also be titled “ quatorze juillet” for the 14th of July for Independence Day in France as that is the biggest holiday in France that fills the whole of Paris with tens to hundreds of thousands of people in the streets. The piece can also be titled “Fountaines De La Concorde” The Fontaines de la Concorde are two monumental fountains located in the Place de la Concorde in the center of Paris. They were designed by Jacques Ignace Hittorff, and completed in 1840 during the reign of King Louis-Philippe. The south fountain commemorates the maritime commerce and industry of France, and the north fountain commemorates navigation and commerce on the rivers of France.
The media of thick oil paint can reach half an inch at many points on this exquisite masterpiece. The color pallet cant be pin pointed as every color is represented with perfect technique. The styles range from impressionism to mid century modern. The excited running figures are stylized as 1950’s artists tried to emulate for the following decade. The Architecture of the Buldings covered with uncountable French flags is impressionism at its finest. Lastly the paint, texture and style of throwing every color representing the wet and aged bronze of the fountain figure is surreal and genius in technique. A rare and important Dyf painting!
Condition: Excellent with no inpaint, damage or repairs. canvas has been recently cleaned and framed. Some wear to frame.
Provenance: Accompanied by a photo-certificate of authenticity from Claudine Dyf, wife of the artist, in which she states that the painting is an original work from the hand of Marcel Dyf. The certificate is dated the 9th of July 2018 with Marcel Dyf Atelier Stamp

Marcel Dyf
Marcel Dyf was born Marcel Dreyfus on 7 October 1899 in Paris. He grew up in Normandy, in the towns of Ault, Deauville and Trouville. He started a career as an engineer but soon decided to become a painter. In 1922, he moved to Arles, where he was trained as a painter and set up a studio.
Career
He painted frescoes in the city halls of Saint-Martin-de-Crau and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. He also painted frescoes in the Museon Arlaten and in the dining hall of the Collège Ampère, both of which are in Arles. He also designed windows inside the Église Saint-Louis in Marseille.
In 1935, he moved to Maximilien Luce's old studio on the Avenue du Maine in Paris. By 1940, because of the German invasion of France during the Second World War, he returned to Arles. He quickly joined the French Resistance in Corrèze and the Dordogne. He later moved back to Paris and finally moved in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. However, in the 1950s, he started wintering in Paris and summering in Cannes, where he attracted the attention of American art collectors.
His work was exhibited and sold at the Petrides Gallery, the Salon d’Automne, the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris as well as galleries in Cannes, Nice, Marseille and Strasbourg. Overseas, it was exhibited at the Frost & Reed Gallery in London.
Personal life[edit]
In 1954, he married Claudine Godat in Cannes, when she was nineteen years old. The Dyfs purchased a sixteenth-century hunting lodge in Bois-d'Arcy near Versailles, and it became their primary residence. They also summered in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Eygalières.
He died on 15 September 1985 in Bois-d'Arcy.
Please also consider AvVintage’s eclectic collection of wonderful fine art paintings with artists such as Emile Albert Gruppe, Alphonse Mucha, Alfred De Breanski, Antoine Blanchard and Marcel Dyf. We strive to collect the highest quality paintings in exceptional condition.
