El Khasné, Petra (Plate 92) — David Roberts, 1856 | Original Antique Lithograph
This is an original 19th-century tinted lithograph titled El Khasné, Petra (Plate 92), after the celebrated Scottish artist David Roberts, R.A. (1796–1864). The work comes from the limited edition of Roberts’ monumental publication The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, & Nubia, published in London on January 1, 1856 by Day & Son, Gate Street, Lincoln’s Inn Fields.
The image depicts the iconic rock-cut façade of Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) at Petra, Jordan—one of the most recognizable archaeological monuments in the world. The dramatic Hellenistic architecture carved into the rose-colored cliff is rendered with remarkable precision, surrounded by rugged landscape details and small staffage figures that provide scale and atmosphere.
Roberts created the original drawings during his travels through the Middle East in 1838–1839, and they were later masterfully lithographed by Louis Haghe, one of the finest architectural lithographers of the 19th century. This quarto edition is known for its refined duotone printing, offering exceptional detail and tonal depth.
The plate number “92” appears in the upper right margin, with full publication credits printed below the image. The print is presented in a tasteful, likely later gold-tone wood frame with blue matting, under glass, ready for display.
