A handsome set of six late 19th century French provincial ladderback dining chairs, sourced in Provence, France. These chairs embody the honest, utilitarian elegance of traditional French farmhouse furniture, designed for everyday use while showcasing skilled regional craftsmanship. Each chair is constructed from solid walnut wood, with warm, naturally aged tones and a rich patina developed over decades of use. The ladderback frames feature gently scalloped horizontal slats, a classic provincial detail, flanked by sturdy uprights topped with subtly turned finials. The legs are hand-turned with restrained bulb-and-ring profiles and connected by full box stretchers, including turned front stretchers, providing excellent stability and long-term durability. The seats retain their traditional hand-woven rush, executed in a four-way envelope pattern. The rush is tight and even, with a gently contoured seat that offers both comfort and visual softness. This type of seat weaving was standard in rural French chair making and reflects the practical craftsmanship of the period. Construction throughout is traditional, with mortise-and-tenon joinery secured by visible wooden pegs. These pegged joints are a hallmark of quality antique construction and were intended to strengthen the frame while allowing for natural wood movement over time. The chairs have been structurally revised to ensure they are solid, tight, and suitable for everyday use. The wood has been carefully cleaned and waxed, enhancing the natural grain and patina while preserving the original character of the finish. Well-proportioned, sturdy, and versatile, this set works beautifully with farmhouse, refectory, or library tables and integrates easily into both traditional and more relaxed interiors.
