The … Read more On offer is “Knight of the Field” aka “A Man in Armour,” a painting by Edgar Allan Ward (1862–1947). The portrait is of an unknown gentleman in full plate armor, complete with a sword at the ready. Signed and dated 1885, it is thought to be an example of the artist's early work while studying at the Royal Academy Schools, where he began in 1880.
The son of two British artists, painter Edward Matthew Ward and the sculptor Henrietta Ward. Edgar Allan Ward excelled in portraiture. He had already won the Creswick Prize a year prior to finishing this painting. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, the oldest art academy in Britian, from 1882 to 1904. He was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (R.O.I.) in 1897. And he went on to teach at the Royal Academy Schools from 1892 to 1928, becoming a Keeper, one of the four principal officers, from 1928 to 1933.
Among his distinguished sitters was Prince Albert Edward, Duke of York, who later became King George V. The artist’s works are among the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, London; the Tate Gallery, London; and the Royal Collection. And now perhaps yours?
