This exceptional antique Limoges fish service dates to the late 19th century and was produced by Oscar Gutherz, one of the important early exporters of Limoges porcelain to the international market.
Founded in Limoges, France, the firm of O. Gutherz & Co. was active during the late 1800s and became well known for producing high-quality porcelain blanks that were richly hand-decorated, often for export to England and the United States. Pieces bearing the “Limoges O. Gutherz” mark are associated with refined tableware intended for formal dining and grand homes, particularly during the height of European fish-course service traditions.
This complete set includes a large oval serving platter measuring approximately 24.75” long by 10.25” wide, accompanied by ten individual fish plates, each measuring approximately 9” in diameter. Each plate features a distinct hand-painted fish study with naturalistic detail, soft coloration, and aquatic botanical elements, making the set both cohesive and visually varied.
Originally designed for serving fish courses during formal multi-course meals, Limoges fish sets of this caliber are now highly sought after for Old Money interiors, whether displayed as wall art, styled on a dining room buffet, or used for elevated entertaining.
The porcelain is antique and period-correct, with appropriate signs of age consistent with late 19th-century Limoges production. No modern reproductions or transfers are present. This is an authentic antique service, increasingly difficult to find intact.
A rare opportunity to acquire a true antique Limoges fish service by Oscar Gutherz, ideal for collectors of European porcelain, French tableware, and refined dining antiques.
