Hand-carved in the style of Louis XVI, our trumeau dates to circa 1880. Trumeaus typically feature a decorative element positioned above the glass, and in this case, there is an inset seaside painting above the 31 (H) x 22 ½ (W) inch vertical mirror. Identical giltwood borders with bead and reel surround the mirror and the painting. More gilded motifs, in the form of floral bouquets inside elongated rectangular moldings, appear in each corner of the frame, which has been painted French gray. The flower arrangements at the bottom emanate from a classical urn, while the ones at the top are suspended from a crinkled ribbon bow.

Reminiscent of old Dutch or Flemish seaside paintings, the oil on canvas depicts a peaceful coastal town under a cloud-filled sky. The focal point is a large windmill towering above a single denizen dressed in a red jacket near the shore. A few sailboats are on the water or docked in the jetty near the windmill, and a steepled building can be seen far in the distance. Intended to be the primary visual focal point, our Louis XVI-style trumeau will instantly brighten any room, especially when a light source is placed near the reflective surface. See less
